United States of America Topographic Maps

Topographic Maps of the United States are found using the USGS (United States Geological Survey) search website - https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/#4/40.01/-100.02. The desired maps must be then manually downloaded to your local machine and then uploaded for use on erybus.com. The steps are as follows:

Step 1. Find and Download USGS maps

  1. Click here (OR the "Find a USGS Map" button below) for the https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/#4/40.01/-100.02 search website. A new webpage will open with the USGS search website
  2. On the USGS search website, zoom into the geographic area for which you would like a map
  3. Click the location for the map you would like
  4. Select the scale you want. Use 250K ( 1:250,000) for less detail and 100K, 63K, or 48K for more detail. Use 24K for extreme detail. Note - only 24K is available for all USA.
  5. Select the map you want. Normally it will be the most recent map.
  6. You need to know the longitude and latitude of the corners of each map you download. Check this can be found on the map itself. Normally longitude and latitude are written on the 24K map corners.
  7. Download the JPEG version of the map to your device. Be sure to unzip (extract) the file so it can be uploaded.
  8. You are now finished with the USGS search website. Close it and return to this webpage.

Step 2. Upload the USGS maps

  1. Click the "Upload a USGS Map" button.
  2. Locate the map you just downloaded on your device
  3. Click "Upload" button.

Step 3. Mark the mapcorners and save

  1. Once uploaded, click OK and the USGS map will appear on the screen.
  2. Using the cursor, mark each of the 4 corners of the map with longitude and latitude. This is used to calculate distance and location on the map so be as accurate as possible.
  3. Click "Save Map" button.
